Water Recycling Workshop/Laboratory Story, 2008

The idea for a water recycling workshop/laboratory arose from the problem of permitting a sewage system at the cabin Cathy and I bought in February of 2007.  At the time of purchase, i assumed that i could find some way to provide water treatment to this wonderful cabin at the junction of the Mahoning Creek and Allegheny River.  The more we dealt with DEP in trying to solve this [problem, the more we realized that a market opportunity might exist.  As we confronted the complexities of the law relating to sewage and water treatment, the more we realized that modern&n

Transparency: The Essence of Waste Management

The current idea of dealing with residential waste is basically, "out of sight, out of mind."  Let's bury everything, and not worry about it.  However, every waste handling system eventually fails.  If it's out of sight, we probably don't know about its failure until long after it happens.   most people don't worry about it, even though it's a significant contributor to water pollution.  In larger urban systems, the same philosophy means that there are a lot of broken pipes, catch-basins and other components that  are secretly sabotaging&nbs

Update of Water Recycling Project

The water recycling workshop/laboratory has been quite a project the last tfour months.  Many events have slowed the project; in particular, the deaths of Steve Mcgraw and my Dad.  Also, the design and building permitting took longer than expected.  The excavation took longer due to the primary contractor backing-out, and hitting a big rock.  The foundation and roofing took longer due to the necessity for engineering drawings (Stiffler-Mcgraw bailed the project out).  Yet, all the concrete work is done and we are ready for the electrical.  Also, today was

DEP's principle that "when public contact or consumption is involved there must be some dilution provided by a fresh water source."

DEP is not relenting in its opposition to the installation of a water recycling system at the cabin on 207 olean Road near Templeton.  They claim it is there policy that "when public contact or comsumption is involved there must be some dilution by a fresh water source (email from Don Leone, 8/19/08)."   Several questions beg for an answer:

What is fresh water

Does this apply to all levels of quality of recycled water?

If the quality of the recycled water is higher than the fresh water, does this still apply?

Steve McGraw

I found out today that the water recycling team has lost a fine man, and I have lost a good friend.  Steve McGraw died of an apparent heart attack while vacationing in South Carolina.  I remember when i first met Steve.  About ten years ago, he was trying to convince the Indiana County Solid Waste Authority to hire his frim (Stiffler- McGraw) as the Authority's engineering firm.  He left such a positive impression, right from the start.  Over the years, he has helped the Authority, make hundreds of thousands of dolars worth of improvements to one

The omnipresence of water

Water is the one chemical essential to all life on this planet; it is the essence of life.  Water preceeded life (In the beginning God created the heavans and the earth.  Now the eath was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters, Gen11-2, NIV).  An amazing relationship was then set in motion between water that was first and the light that was second that would literally bathe the earth with life-giving water, in three very useful forms - gas, liquid or solid.  The earth'

Fresh water spring at cabin

The last week or so I have been working to repair the spring dam at the cabin at 207 Olean Road. The water recycling system we are planning for the cabin requires a reliable and quality source of the water. I had assumed that the spring would be an excellent source since the neighbors all talked about the reliable and tasty spring water that use to flow there before the previous owner dammed it up for the cabin’s use; and the guy at Culligan said it was some of the best water he’d ever seen (perfect ph, hardness of 3 and little iron). When we bought the cabin Cath
